"Was I inspired?" I'm tellin'ya, "I was inspired!"
The annual conference of the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) in Chicago last week was the place to be. Not only because it is the home of Barack and Michelle Obama, and the DNC was going on, but the atmosphere among conferees was one of overwhelming optimism. Over 4,000 known black museums and historic homes are keeping our history and culture alive throughout America with traveling exhibits from the Smithsonian to the Tavis Smiley traveling exhibit, “America, I Am”; to the heritage trail that runs from the South Carolina Sea Islands down the Eastern Coast to Florida: to the Underground Railroad from Texas to Mexico proposed tourism corridor (See HCR 245). Folks, there is a lot going on. I invite you to get involved on a local level, in your own neighborhood. Do your genealogy, get together with your friends, family and colleagues and start a preservation project; at the least, organize a family reunion. Folks need to see each other and love each other in person.
Your thoughts…???
My next event will be keeping alive the Austin Town Festival, the birthplace of modern day Texas in Brazoria County. Brazoria is home to so much black history you wouldn’t believe it. I have written 5 plays about this county’s history. You don’t wanna miss it.
